Tafo Cultural Center
Akyem, Ghana
Theme
"Honoring the Africans Involuntarily
Uprooted from the Continent"

Purpose

It is the purpose of the Ghana Kinship Project to construct in the ancient Ghanaian City of Tafo, Akyem Abuakwa, a cultural center that will be Pan-African in nature, subject, interest and mission. The project will be an international project of African people dedicated to the goals and missions of the greatest thinkers of Africa including Nana Yaa Asantewaa, Kwame Nkrumah, Efua Sutherland, W.E.B. DuBois, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., Queen Mother Moore, Bantu Steve Biko, Walter Rodney, Amilcar Cabral, and Edward Blyden.

Objective

The objective of the project is to highlight the cultural contributions of the Akyem and other Ghanaian ethnic groups as well as continental African and diasporan African cultures. There will have to be several phases to the project which already includes plans for a theater, art museum, children's library, traditional medicine center, rural broadcasting facilities, performance space, and seminar rooms. Plans call for a research institute to be attached to the Center for international conferences, workshops and research in Afrocentric theory and practice.

Official Recognition

This project is supported and officially recognized by the Tafohene, Nana Adusei Peasah IV, who has generously donated the land for the construction of the Center. Spearheaded by Nana Okru Asante Peasah, Kyidomhene of Tafo (also known as Dr. Molefi Kete Asante), the Pan African Cultural Center Project was developed with the support of Okwae Asare and Kwame Botwe-Asamoah. With a team of interested persons, from Ghana and the United States, the Ghana Kinship Project, has been formed to institute the project.

Immediate Goals

The immediate goal is to raise $1 million US Dollars to support the construction of The Pan African Cultural Center at Tafo, spur economic development, and contribute to the advancement of African culture and industry. We are confident that the African community in the United States and throughout the African world, as well as other interested individuals, will donate funds and other resources to create the first Pan African Cultural Center anywhere in the African world. We need to raise $100,000 by July 1999 to complete the first phase. Checks should be made payable to:

The Children's Library At Tafo

A Children's Library will be a major component of the Pan African Cultural Center at Tafo. We envision a fully-computerized, multi-media Library that will capture the imagination and creativity of our young people. Plans also include after-school and weekend programs and activities.
